1.   To be at least 17 years old.

2.   A provisional driving licence.  You can apply for your licence up to three months before your 17th birthday. To get a licence, go to the Post Office, pick up and send off two application forms – a D1 and the new photo licence application form D750.  You will need your provisional licence before you can take any lessons, although you can book them at any time.

3.   Instruction.  Professional Driving instruction is recommended.  You can also practise in another vehicle if:- 

a) you are accompanied by someone who is at least 21 years of age and have held a full driving licence for at least three years

B) you display ‘L’ plates at the back and front of the car

C) Have Insurance cover – If you are learning to drive in a driving school car, insurance cover will be provided.


Remember, to get a full licence, you need to pass both your Theory and Practical Tests.  You should book your theory test as soon as you start learning to drive. Your instructor will let you know when you're ready to sit your practical test.
